When is it time to replace to replace your roof?
-
Asphalt Shingles wear through the loss of
granules. When the granules have worn off to the point
there are patches becoming evident or there are an excess of
granules in your eaves troughs, it may be time to replace the
roof. We can assess this for you.
-
Cedar and Pine shakes will wear thin and
split over time. Some may become mouldy and rotten.
When a high degree of splitting or rotting has occurred or the
shakes are becoming too thin to be safely repaired it is time to
be replaced. Shake felt paper may appear in the cracks
which is the roofs final defence against the weather and will
not last too long before leaks will occur. We can help
determine the best options for your situation.
How to choose a contractor?
-
Do your research. Check with the local
BBB. Ask friends whom they would recommend. Get
referrals and check them out by both looking at the work and
talking to the homeowners whenever possible. Make sure the
contractor has adequate insurance against injury and loss.
A good contractor should have no problem sharing this
information with a prospective customer. BBB members
information is available online through the local Better
Business Bureau.
-
A reputable contractor should not require a
substantial deposit up front. A maximum of 30% is
recommended with the balance payable on completion less a 10%
holdback for 45 days to ensure the work is of high quality while
reserving your right to prevent liens on your property. Contact
Alberta Consumer Affairs for more information. Remember
good contractors have good credit with their suppliers and
installers. Action Roofing & Siding Ltd. has such
relationships with its suppliers and workers.
-
A Contractor who does off site sales and
wants to collect a deposit is required to have a license and
deposit on file with the Alberta Government. Ensure the
contractor you are dealing with has these credentials.
Without them you may have no recourse in the event of a default
on your contract. Action Roofing & Siding Ltd. has
the appropriate certificates and licenses.
How does hail affect asphalt shingles?
-
The damage can be classified into two groups:
aesthetic damage and functional damage. Aesthetic
damage results in slight granule loss and the life of the
shingle is usually not affected. Functional damage is
characterized by substantial granule loss or cracking or
penetration of the shingle. Functional damage may result
in short term leaks or a reduction of the life expectancy of the
shingle.
-
According to CASMA Technical Bulletin No. 14
(1997), there are several factors that impact how roofing
shingles perform in hail

What are the ventilation requirements for
attic spaces?
- Proper ventilation is the
key to the comfort and enjoyment of your home. It also helps
preserve the integrity of the attic area. Incorrect
ventilation prevents the attic space from working as designed.
Action Roofing & Siding can help you determine what your needs
are for this critical aspect of your home.
- The amount of ventilation needed is determined by
the size and design of the roof. For roof and attic spaces
above an insulated ceiling, the vent ratio is one square foot of
net free ventilating area/300 square feet. For low
slope roofs or roofs with cathedral ceilings the vent ratio is
one square foot/150 square feet.
- Options for ventilation include louver style, turbines,
ridge venting.
- We can help you explore your options for ventilation after
an on site estimate.
How can 'Ice Dams' can be prevented
from forming?
- Installing a vapour barrier above the home's warm space.
- Insulating the attic floor.
- Ventilating the attic.
Damage from ice dams, if they do form, can be reduced by:
- Removing debris from gutters so that it does not build
up over time.
- Making sure that the outer edges of the gutters are
lower than the slope line. This will allow for snow and
ice to slide clear.
- Installing proper eaves protection, such as a self adhering
membrane or another approved eave protection product.
What are the advantages of drip edge flashings?
- Hides the edge of the roof decking.
- Helps prevent the 'wicking' of water onto the fascia area.
